Vincent Smith (1929-2003) was a Brooklyn native and army veteran. After seeing Cézanne at MOMA in 1952, he quit his job at the USPS to pursue art.
Throughout his career, Vincent was interested in an examination of the Black experience in America, in addition to the study of African history and culture—his work reflects an awareness of whitewashed art history. Here, Smith paints sunflowers as an ode to another Vincent.
