Folk Art Memorial Dog Portrait Painting

Oil on canvas
Circa: 1840
Size: 19” x 24”
At first look the strangeness of this image is not apparent, however as one starts to "read" it we see that the elevated dog and ring of flowers tell us it's a memorial painting. Though there was a tradition of painting and photographing memorials of children, I have not seen one of a dog—and done so lovingly well.

The dog sits in the living room which is well detailed with wallpaper, a mirror, a screen and a diaphonous curtain, and a beautifully rendered landscape painting hanging on the wall. The flowers are well painted and highly detailed. The care and attention to the whole is reflective of the love for the parted dog.
