American Covered Ash Burl Bowl

Circa: 1820-1840
Size: 5 1/2" D x 7" H
A fine and proportionally tall and narrow form—nicely turned from a well figured burl specimen with a fitted top and thin body. The mushroom style finial is turned from the solid. The whole reads as an elongated acorn. Covered burl bowls are rare and were meant to be seen at the table versus a typical burl bowl which was used in food preparation and part of the kitchen.

The cover and body maintain a complex, original surface with a well alligatored shellac.

An old collection label is pasted on the bottom: "H. M. Wiltsie #74." This covered burl bowl has been part of the pioneering collection of Catherine Wiltsie, the renowned collection of Tom & Carolyn Porter and a discerning private Midwestern collection.

Provenance: Wiltsie Collection, OH; Porter Collection, OH; Private Midwestern Collection.
