Maine Island

Though painted in the latter half of the 19thC, the painting foreshadows the work of Milton Avery and John Marin. The nearly vertically composed tight waves vibrate with energy and direct us to a single hilly island with a steamer by a private beach. Rocky outcrops, a sail boat, and a cluster of white birch trees add to the composition.

Private collection for the last 30 years.
